Auckland floods (January 2023) and Cyclone Gabrielle (February 2023)

In response to 2 closely-timed severe weather events at the start of 2023, the Temporary Accommodation Service (TAS) was activated for several regions in the North Island.

Following damage caused by the Auckland floods, TAS was activated for Auckland on 8 February.

Following damage caused by Cyclone Gabrielle, TAS was activated for other affected regions of the country on 27 February:

  • Te Tai Tokerau | Northland
  • Tairāwhiti | Gisborne
  • Te Moana a Toi | Bay of Plenty
  • Te Matau-a-Māui | Hawke’s Bay
  • Waikato
  • Tararua District

If you need temporary accommodation following the floods or Cyclone Gabrielle and live in any of these regions, register your details with us and a temporary accommodation coordinator will call you to discuss your needs.

We understand that this is a difficult time, and will aim to contact you within 2 days of registering. You only need to register once per household. If you have already registered with us and received an email confirming your registration, please do not register again – we have your registration and will be in touch.

If you are currently staying with friends or whānau and think you may need to use the service in the coming weeks or months, we recommend you register with the service now.

Our coordinators work with affected households to understand their housing requirements, identify temporary accommodation options, and provide guidance on how to access support services such as insurance advice and financial assistance.

Until suitable temporary accommodation is found, you may need to stay with friends or whānau, or other emergency accommodation.

It may be easier to find initial accommodation if you can be flexible in some of your requirements – for example, have a friend look after a pet or take a longer commute to your work. Temporary accommodation more suitable to your needs, such as something pet-friendly or closer to your work, may become available later down the track.
